It’s Never Safe to Blast With Silica Sand
Even if you’re wearing a respirator, blasting with silica sand is extremely hazardous and should be avoided at all costs.
WHAT IS SILICA SAND?
Silica sand, including crystalline silica, beach sand, river sand, and any other sand, as well as metal refining slags, silicates, or abrasives containing any trace of heavy metals or biological microorganisms, pose severe health risks. Using these materials for blasting can result in serious illness or death. If you’re unsure about the safety of an abrasive material, do NOT use it.
WHY ISN’T SILICA SAFE?
Crystalline silica is classified as a Class 1 Carcinogen. Blasting with any form of silica sand can be lethal, making it one of the most dangerous materials to use in abrasive blasting.
THE HEALTH RISKS
When silica sand is used for blasting, it breaks down into tiny particles that become airborne. If workers inhale these particles, they can develop silicosis—a severe lung condition where the particles get trapped in the lungs, forming fibrotic nodules. Additionally, workers can unintentionally expose others to silica dust by simply being around them in contaminated clothing.

LAWS IN PLACE
Blasting with silica sand is illegal in many countries due to the severe health risks involved. BlastOne has created a checklist to help you stay compliant with OSHA silica laws and regulations.
