In the bustling industrial heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, Brock was tasked with a challenging project: a 180-foot diameter tank, new steel, waiting to be prepared for coating. Their main objectives were clear – increase productivity while reducing the labor required for such a large task. Historically, the blasting team of four managed to cover 400 sq ft/hr, each blaster achieving around 100 sq ft/hr, falling short of the industry standard of 150 sq ft/hr. A new approach was needed.
The road header bored away at the tunnel wall in order to create an extra lane. Due to the amount of dust produced, this 10 month project would lead to decreased visibility in an already dark tunnel. BlastOne recommended a mobile dust collector.
The results were transformative. The VertiDrive was able to achieve a stunning 400 sq ft/hr – the same as what four blasters had managed previously, but now with only the one machine. Even more impressive, the combination of the VertiDrive and the two manual blasters propelled productivity to 600 sq ft/hr. This not only outperformed the previous rate, but also reduced the labor needed by one person.
The client was so impressed with the VertiDrive’s performance that they decided to employ it further. The VertiDrive was also used to blast the roof of the tank, a task it handled with ease. Given its proven effectiveness, the machine was retained on site for use on another tank.
