In April 2022, Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (NKOM) approached us with an industrial blasting task. The challenge was to remove a 30-mils silicone coating from a ship hull at their dockyard in Doha, Qatar. Aiming to increase productivity, enhance safety, and optimize labor utilization, NKOM needed a solution that would meet these objectives efficiently.
Our proposed solution was the M7 VertiDrive, an advanced abrasive blasting robot known for its high productivity and safety. Equipped with 2 #8 Snakebite nozzles, the VertiDrive was set up to use coal slag abrasive. Despite the constraints of 2.0” bull hoses and pusher lines reducing the operating pressure to 90 psi, we believed the VertiDrive M7 would outperform manual methods.
The M7 VertiDrive did not disappoint. It achieved a productivity rate of 200 sq ft/hr, a marked improvement compared to the previous rate of 70 sq ft/hr per blaster. This result effectively meant the VertiDrive was doing the work of nearly three manual blasters, achieving a significant labor optimization.
NKOM was thoroughly impressed with the VertiDrive M7’s performance. In fact, they were so satisfied with the results and the improvement in productivity, safety, and labor optimization that they decided to purchase two VertiDrive units.
This case study reinforces the difference that the VertiDrive M7 can make in industrial blasting operations. The remarkable productivity rate, combined with increased safety and labor optimization, highlights the potential of this innovative technology. Once again, VertiDrive proves its vital role in helping our clients deliver Faster, Safer, Cleaner solutions.
