They received a large oil tank blasting project from Enbridge. Enbridge operates across North America delivering reliable, affordable sources of energy through liquids pipelines, natural gas pipelines, gas distribution and storage, and renewable energy. They are the third-largest natural gas utility by consumer count. Additionally, the produce about 30% of the crude oil in North America and transport 20% of the natural gas consumed in the United States.

CL Coatings approached BlastOne about full field blasting six 220′ diameter floating roof crude oil tanks. The project included milscale removal. Altogether, they aimed for SP5 on the interior floor, SP10 on the roof, and SP6 on the shell.

First, we improved CL Coating’s equipment fleet. The upgraded equipment included BlastOne Airpreps, MegaBlaster, and high-production nozzles.

Next, we switched to a more effective abrasive, GMA ToughBlast. ToughBlast achieves a high surface profile from 3-3.75 mil – thus preparing an significantly clean surface. Visibility also undeniably improved on-site due to the low dust factor.

Overall, the project averaged 1.75lbs/ft² with a production rate of 220 ft^2/hr.

By switching to GMA ToughBlast, our client used 5x less abrasive. With the high production rate, Enbridge saved over a day and a half on labor costs. Moreover, they saved $300,000 by using GMA ToughBlast abrasive.
